Monster Storms of Long Island

There was no warning. The weather bureau in Washington D.C. thought the hurricane was moving offshore. The ocean entered the bay. The bay entered the creek. The creek headed straight into Westhampton Beach. 52 people died on Long Island. More than a hundred homes on Dune Road simply washed away.

Monster Storms of Long Island #1: Long Island Express 1938

It was the most damaging storm in Long Island history. Thirty-foot waves offshore. 90% of the Island lost power. Historic flooding and beach erosion. All MTA bridges and tunnels were closed, all parkways closed, the LIRR suspended, airports closed for days and there were 13 deaths on Long Island.

Monster Storms of Long Island #2: Superstorm Sandy 2012 

Meteorologists called it a "once in 500-year storm." The legendary Blizzard of '88 started the night of March 11 and lasted 72 hours. The forecast was for 50 degrees and light rain. There was more than 30" snow on LI with drifts to 40 feet. Temps from -1 to 11 degrees.  Hundreds of people died.

The last hurricane where the eye hit Long Island. 100 mph winds were measured in Montauk. There were 11 deaths on L.I. due mostly to falling trees There was $285 million in damage. 750,000 had no power for weeks.  President Reagan declared L.I a disaster area. 

Monster Storms of Long Island #4: Hurricane Gloria 1985

Medford got 33.5 inches of snow. Roads were impassable and hundreds of cars were abandoned on local roadways. 26 miles of the LIE were closed.  Flights were cancelled. 

Monster Storms of Long Island #5: Blizzard of 2013

The storm toppled thousands of trees, causing widespread outages and blocking roads. Wind gusts were between 70 and 80 mph and more than 420,000 PSEG customers lost power during the high heat and humidity. Gov. Cuomo declared a State of Emergency for Long Island.

Monster Storms of Long Island #6: Tropical Storm Isaias

Long Island was paralyzed when more than 2 feet of snow fell. Ronkonkoma got 24" and here were 75 m.p.h. winds. It took days to dig out.   

Monster Storms of Long Island #7: Blizzard of 1978

Islip broke a state 24-hour rainfall record with 13.57 inches.  There was extreme flooding on Sunrise Highway with cars submerged and floating.  Hundreds of motorists were stranded.

Carol made landfall on the East End. Montauk was turned into an island for several days when local roads were submerged.  Boats sank in at the Yacht Club. There was $5 million in property damage.

At one point, snowfall rates approached 6" per hour. Roads were closed. Travel was banned. The LIRR shut down. There were 6 deaths.
